2018 OPEN One+ Mountain Bike (Custom Black)
This was a fun little project. Honestly, I had never done a bicycle before (aside from my own), and prior to Ron contacting me for this opportunity, it actually crossed my mind a few nights before as to why not coat bicycles? I was definitely not set up to efficiently work on bikes, and had to improvise some work space. I did have a few stands from working on my own bike, and it worked for this purpose anyway. Ron’s super rare OPEN ONE+ carbon frame was recently clear coated over (originally Matte Black). Upon reassembly, it was discovered that the paint was pretty hammered, whether it be from shipping, the bike shop, no one really knows. But hey, if it’s got clear coat, it’s polish-able and coat-able. To gain more access, we had to remove the wheels as well as the new chain tape. It was also made clear to the owner that there are some very tight corners that makes in almost impossible to machine polish, but the end goal was to really get the areas immediately visible at eye level presentable again. We got some pretty good results on the main (flatter) areas, and then topped this bike off with Opticoat Pro+, which will help protect this bicycle for many years to come, keep it cleaner longer, and also making it much easier (and safer) to wash.
Next time, I’ll probably get some sort of seat post stand to work around the bike rather than working on one half at a time.
